Hillary's Highlights | Fly Fishing is Easy

Fly Fishing is Easy

I have found that most of the joy that I experience while fly fishing is derived from being out in the fresh open air, away from the concrete jungle. It is so relaxing and stress free. Catching fish is almost just a bonus. But we do want to catch fish!

If you are new, fly fishing is not difficult. With the proper equipment and understanding of some fly fishing basics, you will become one of the many and growing number of fly fishing lovers in no time.

The first point I want to make is that even though you have probably heard that fly fishing is trout fishing, fly fishing lovers can fish for other species as well.

The main difference between fly fishing and “normal” fishing is this. In fly fishing the line is heavy and the fly is light. In “normal” fishing the fly is heavy and the line is light. What makes fly fishing special is that it also requires some different techniques than traditional fishing. Traditional fishing may involve casting a baited hook and waiting for a fish to bite. However, fly fishing involves casting repeatedly with brief pauses to allow the fly to float in the current.

Another important element when learning is that the angler knows how to tie all of the common fly fishing knots required to correctly assemble the gear. There are different types of knots you can and should learn, and a variety of books or even videos can help you.

There is more to learn, but just get out there and start practicing. What are you waiting for?
