When it comes to promotional campaigns, many businesses make the fatal mistake of developing targets which are far too woolly and vague to be of any real value in the long run. If a business decides to run a campaign to promote a particular product, and states that the target or intention is to ‘increase sales’, what exactly does this mean?
Are sales already increasing, in which case, how can the effect of any campaign be measured? If the sales are not increasing, how is the promotion going to actively address this issue? One of the most crucial aspects of any successful business campaign to promote products or services is to have a clear idea in mind of the intention, and the performance criteria, or methods by which the relative success of the campaign can be measured.
In this way it becomes easier to identify which strategies are working well, and which are not, helping you to develop and plan your budget more effectively in the future. The questions which need to be answered very specifically prior to launching a promotional campaign include thinking about what you are promoting, (be specific – which service, which product?), and to whom you are promoting it.
Being too vague, suggesting that the product is for everyone will water your campaign down so much in order to try to appeal to everyone that you will almost certainly create a weak message ignored by most. Teenagers will not be attracted to the same ideas and messages as city executives or housewives.
Once you know what you’re promoting and to whom, you can then start to address the ‘how’ part. A successful promotional campaign can have a massive impact; a woolly, vague campaign will merely cost you money.
